In this episode, Ben will become a “mentalist” and will amaze your students with a Mental-Math-Mind-Reading trick!
First, he will ask his guest, Curley, to choose a secret number between 1 and 15, and write it down without showing it.
Then Ben will present the chart with mixed numbers on it. After Curley points to the column/s where his secret number is found, Ben (without seeing the numbers on the chart) announces the secret number!
Ben will explain the Math-Mind-Reading trick so your students can entertain and amaze their family and friends…a perfect way to get young students interested in Math…and Magic Numbers!
How and Why it Works?
To find the secret number, ask the volunteer to tell you in which column (or columns) the number appears. Now add the top numbers in those columns together and that tells you the secret number!
If for example the number was 7. The volunteer will announce that 7 appears in columns A, B and C. You then add up 1+2+4=7. It’s going to work with every other number as well!
All you have to do is memorize the top number in the 4 columns (A=1; B=2; C=4; D=8).
The top row of numbers, 1, 2, 4 and 8 are assigned to columns A, B, C and D. Those 4 numbers appear only ONCE!
Other numbers (3,5,6,7,9,10,11,12,13,14,15) are assigned to selected columns (but not in a random way).
For example: 3 would be assigned to columns A and B because the numbers in the top row of columns A and B are 1 and 2 which add up to the number 3. The number 14 will show up in columns B, C and D. (2+4+8=14)
